From 1817 to 1858, the United States government engaged in a bitter conflict with the Seminole Nation. This conflict would result in three distinct wars. The Second Seminole War (1835-1842) was conducted under the Indian Removal Policy of the 1830’s. This war was a result of the American plantation societies’ relentless efforts to enslave the Black Seminole population. The United States government’s objective became to return as many Black Seminoles, if not all, to slavery. Evidence proves that the efforts of the U.S. military to place Blacks in bondage were not only a major underlying theme throughout the War, but at various points, the primary goal. It is clear that from the onset of the war, the United States government, military, and state militias grossly underestimated both the determination and the willingness of the Black Seminole to resist at all cost. Thus, this book will not only make the argument that the Second Seminole War was indeed a slave rebellion, but perhaps the most successful one in United States’ history.

Florida Negro War Black Seminoles and the Second Seminole War 18351842 Anthony E Dixon 9780692024966 Books

This book provides a very informative and vivid account of Black Seminole involvement and what it really meant to be a “Black Seminole” during the Second Seminole War. The argument leading up to the statement that “this book frames the war primarily as a slave rebellion and not as an Indian war” is convincing. Yet, it seems that it truly was equally an Indian war AND a slave rebellion where both parties recognized an enemy and fought together as one Seminole Nation (including Black Seminoles and Runaways) against the threats to their freedom. It is really a testament to Dr. Dixon’s book that, as an architecture student and a graphic learner, I found several sparks of interest within his writing style that were able to illustrate several characters from the past. I’ve found this public history book style to be much more conducive to learning than traditional academic texts. There are hopes that this style of book is included in more History classrooms in the future to supplement the traditional texts and provide better learning experiences.

Florida Negro War Black Seminoles and the Second Seminole War 18351842 Anthony E Dixon 9780692024966 Books Reviews

Florida's Negro War Black Seminoles and the Second Seminole War 1835-1842 by Anthony Dixon was a very informative book as it gave you a thoroughly review of the history of the Black Seminoles and their wars. A excellent book to use for researching or just for a good read. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for information about the struggles of Black Seminoles as well as their fight for their freedom in the 2nd Seminole War.
The scope of Dr. Dixons research primarily covers the years from the administrations of, George Washington to James Polk. Dr.
Dixon consequently believes it is essential to be especially cognizant of the role and contributions made by Black Seminoles in the period of study.
In reading this novel it is clear that Dr. Dixon used a great amount of effort and sources to write
the first comprehensive book that examines the Second Seminole War with a central focus on Black
involvement. He uses evidence throughout this novel to “demonstrate that the efforts of the US military
to place Blacks in bondage were not only a major underlying theme throughout the war, but at various
points, the primary objective. The fact that the US military wanted to enslave all the Black Seminoles
proves Dr. Dixons point that this was the largest slave rebellion in US history. In reading this novel I now
have more of a knowledge of the Black contribution into the Seminole Wars and just how much Blacks
and Natives benefited from one another alike. Overall Dr. Dixon does a great job outlining his thesis and
backing it up well throughout his novel for the readers enjoyment.
Excellent book
